Set a newbie straight.......

Hello all, I did my formal intro in the "new to the community" section, but I need your help. I did a search with every combination of words last night, but want to verify some stuff. I will be the PROUD owner of a 2008 Sporty Nightster this week. I finally came to my senses and got an american made ride

The questions I have is this. I will be adding some black Freedom Amendment pipes with a RSD air cleaner intake. I am still confused about all this PCM, PCM mapping, or having the dealership put a new map when it is done. Which one should I do? I'm not worried about the money - just want to do what is right.

The bike I bought from the Private Party comes with an ext. warranty and service plan, so I am sure this would probably void the warranty - so I was leaning to buying a programmer so in case something did happen I could put the factory stuff back on....instead of having a dealer install a map and them knowing what I have.....input?

And yes I am proud to ride a sporty and not say its "for the woman" cuz IT'S NOT!!!!!!! I'm just stoked I can afford one

Welcome

Bikes run lean from the factory, reduce backpressure, and they run even leaner...fuel management is highly recommended...as far as warranty goes, my dealer doesn't care about pipes, if there's non engine/ non factory pipe hanger issues...I'd assume it's like that across the board.

Just let the dealer do the reprogramming and that way you should have no warranty issues.

Just called the dealer today about remapping my V-Rod, they told me they could only remap if I bought their screamin eagle tuner kit and high flow air filter the they could dyno and remap for a mere 1,000.00. think I am going to find a pc3 or vance and hines fuel pack.

1 grand is really steep, I hear good things about the SERT...I'm running a PCIII, and I wouldn't really recommend it...I'd prefer a system that learns on it's own and uses the O2 bungs... weather conditions change....

I hear good things about the Thundermax.

WOW - good info. but geez most HD dealers really know how to keep our pockets empty! I looked at the ThunderMax, and REALLY like what it does. Watched the videos on youtube, and it looks like that may be the way to go. Also looks simple to install.......well see - but thanks for all the feedback!!!!

I'd talk it over with the dealer you end up with. Might oughta look around for one you think you can live with.
Some are more happy tho screw you oughta your money than others. Then I personnally go with what their tuner likes to work and is comfortable with. Usually if a dealer has a hand in whatever you lash up the waruntee will be honored.

Thanks Vlade. Yeah after going to the ThunderMax website, I'm back to square one on deciding what the hell to do! I'm going to talk to couple of my buddies who get their HD's worked on at the local shop and have them refer me to someone to talk to their and see what happens. Geez this is confusing! I never thought it would be so hard due to all the options to add pipes and an air intake!

Take all the time you need. what you got on there probably wont rust up for quite awhile. Do the R and D and save yourself time and money in the long run. I'd emphasise again hang out, nose around and find people/dealers you like to deal with. Lots can be heard and seen just "Shopping" for chrome etc. not buying though dont let the WALL of SHINEY stuff hypotize ya.
