Widest Tire For Sportster

What is the widest tire you can put on a stock sportster rear rim.
And what is the widest tire you can put on a sportster with a aftermarket rear rim?
I have a XL1200L 08

Thanks

A 150-80x16 rear tire is stock on an 07 sporty, Rocker.

A 160-80x16 is the widest, without having to replace a sprocket or gain clearence any other way for the belt. Metzlers are just a tad taller then Dunlops, for reference, even though the same printed size.

Metzlers are wider then Dunlops, and Avons run wider then the Metzlers, in my experince.

Even at that......the 3" wide rear rim of the sporty is barely wide enough for a 150mm rear tire, let alone pinching a 160 onto it, for appearence only. You begin to lose contact area due to the crowning of the tire, "making" it fit on a rim that's too narrow.

150-90-16 just went on the sporty....'05 (dunlop ) and i'm hard pressed to put on any bigger...the fender clearance just isnt there....dont overlook what may happen with a 160 going up into the rear fender on a pothole....that tire may be shredded in a second, not to mention that sudden rotational stoppage.......7

just my .02.....g

I didnt buy a Sportster because I wanted a Harley,
