Getting a couple bogs in first gear, help?

1992 Sportster Bobber project
Hey, as the title states, only in first gear from time to time I get a couple bogs in a row. It seems as if it will keep doing it too if I do not shift out of it. It will rev up a few hundred rpms, then cut out, then rev up a few hundred more, then cut out all while accelerating. So on and so forth. It creates an unpleasant jerking motion that needs to be addressed. Any insight?
Also, I hear a "tumbling/rattling metal noise" coming from the engine/trans area after I shift into 4th or 5th gear under acceleration only. If I have the clutch in this noise ceases to persist. Also, with the clutch isengaged, as long as I come off the throttle, it won't make the noise. Any thoughts into that one as well? Just picked her up for a good price so I don't mind dropping a couple bucks into it if the need be. Thanks in advance folks.

Dan

Sounds to me like you'll need to remove the primary cover and take a look inside . Check out the shift quadrant and the drive chain tension and tensioner . You'll be able to see inside the trans somewhat by peering around the side of the trapdoor . IMO , time to get yourself a factory service manual so you'll know what you're looking at .
