Rear Turn Signals

I want to change my rear turn signals on a 2002 sportster 883. I bought some that are one wire. When I pulled the rear right one off, it had a purple and black wire. I can not make heads or tails of the wiring diagram in the book. My question is, What do the two wirings do and will the one wire turn signals work? Thanks for the help.

Newer turn signals on HD have a ground wire. Black is ground, purple is positive.

On the older ones, the single wire is positive, and the lamp grounds via contact when mounted. You can see the ground in the socket routes to the inside of the lamp housing.

So, the turn signals that I have are for an older sportster. They will not work?

If they are single wire you should be able to attach a ground wire someplace or replace the inside socket with one with two wires.
