You probably are just hearing the normal operation of the motor when off the throttle...

When you are on the throttle you cant hear it because the exhaust drones it out. But when you lay off, you are able to hear it.

I agree with blackknight, it shouldn't be an issue. I have an 02 1200C and it wines a little but it's obviously the operational sounds of the engine.

Check the front drive pulley, they have a history of coming loose on the Sporty. You'll have to remove the exhaust pipe and right side cover to inspect it.

I didn't say "come off" I said "loosen". When the nut that fastens the pulley to the 5th gear gets loose the pulley can walk out on the gear splines and the splines in the pulley start to strip out and that makes noise before it finally fails. When the splines strip out completely the bike will no longer move when in gear !

My 2008 1200R does not whine at all, ever.

Whine:

A peevish complaint: a complaint or protest, especially one made repeatedly in an annoyingly plaintive voice.

Altho,,,come to think of it,,, I hear my bike when I shut the throttle at times,
I think it's sayin, "Oh No No NO get back on the gas you wimp" XD
