well it's back to square one, took it over to my sisters to help her move and it wouldn't start up for the return trip, heading back this weekend to start running through and testing the systems, hoping for a bad VR simply because i don't want to tear the bike down to replace the stator. unfortunately money is tight so sending it to a shop is out of the question, guess you gotta learn somewhere huh?

Again, start simple.

There is a very specific way to install the battery on the 04 up sportsters. If not properly followed will result in the battery negative cable loosening up at the terminal every time .

1) Remove the battery hold down strap .
2) Remove positive cable from terminal .
3) Disconnect negative cable from the top of trans .
4) Slide battery out pulling the negative cable with it .
5) Tighten negative cable to battery terminal with cable pointing down.
6) Start battery into place feeding negative cable back in and down to trans .
7) Reconnect positive cable to terminal and install hold down strap .
8) Reconnect negative cable to top of trans .
9) Thank SCHMIDTYS for the write up

If that all looks Kosher, then start going through the charging system.

Always disconnect the negative battery cable first and reinstall last. That way if you accidently touch the positive to any metal it won't short to ground !

it's carb, I was able to go through today and the stator checks out the connections are all clean and secure so the only thing I'm left to think is that the voltage regulator is the culprit. Heading down tomorrow to shell out the cash to get up and running again.
