sporty doesn't want to cooperate

Picked up an '05 1200 Custom a couple months ago and it's giving me some issues that I can't quite figure out.

Two weeks ago I took an 80 mile cruise and on the way back the gauges and lights all died, no speedo, no signals, nothing, about a half mile after that the bike sputtered and quit. Luckily my wife wasn't too far away and was able to jump start me and to get myself close enough I could safely store it for the night, it died again just before I got to a place to park it and wouldn't turn over again. picked up a new battery the next day and replaced it hoping that the issue was just a toasted battery.

Yesterday I rode to work, bike started just fine, parked it and gave my 8 hours to the man, Came out to start it up and click....*long scary pause* then she rumbled to life.

I haven't changed anything other than the battery on it. It's kept on a tender when it's parked at home, when i purchased it it had 8600 miles on it, I just put it over 8900 yesterday on the trip to work.

any ideas? or anyone had the same issue?

I'm no electrical wiz. But, maybe the ground strap to the frame is loose. Would that not allow the battery to get charged while driving??

Ward, don't you think you were a little rough on the Beaver last night?

Start simple... Battery cables or ground.
Then
Load test battery
Diagnose charging system

Sounds to me you may have a bad VR.

Leave the gun. Take the cannoli.

It could happen again. It happened to me over and over. Finally I realized the ground post was what kept coming lose. A tiny bit of thread lock and no more issues.

you know what's funny is that we will always be able to tell our buddy what to do about it, or if it were the car we would instantly think what to do; but when it's the bike it's like " OOOOOOO WHAT DO I DO??!??!

We all know it's true.
