2010 ultra overheating

friend of mine in arkansas has a 2010 ultra and it runs so hot that the mufflers turn blue. the harley rep says this is normal. he pulled the plugs out at 2000 mile and the aluminum was welded to the plug. question is does any one witha a 09 or 10 having this problem. the rep told him he would have to put a stage 1 kit and aftermarket mufflers on it at a cost of $1450.00 to get rid of the problem. any input would be appreciated. thanks

over heating 2010

Hey Dude , Read the post if you have time . the 2008 over all is the best year ! I have bought most all new year Ultras up to 09 . the 09's had so many problems with broken frames wobbling wheels an the list goes on that I have kept my 08 Ultra as it was the last year of the major add ons on the old frames . Its got the best computor ,anti lock brembo brakes, 6 gallon gas tank , best 6 speed with little or no whine an the list goes on like rear cylinder cut out @ iddle when hot an the big 96 c.u. engine with fly by wire throttle with out the problems of the 09 an now the 10's with the extreme cats that make the mega heat . the 08s will the highest desired Ultras in the future . Better look around an buy a low milage 08 Ultra while you can . the 08s have everthing the 09-10s have the except the problems . just my opion Bud

Melted aluminum dont sound good. I dont think his dealer is doing him any favors. My dealer said just to try a PC first for a better AFR. Going to see if they is lying tomorow.

Have a 09 and it may run hot if you sit in traffic but not like you are experiencing. I have heard the 2010 motors are running hotter because of the catalyst in the exhaust. Sounds like yours is running way too lean. I hope your dealer can solve your problem.

I think that dealer is smoking crack if he's telling you that kind of stuff. I think I'd try another dealer and get a second opinion. You shouldn't have to put out 1500 bucks to get it to stop melting aluminum. It's under warranty.....so make em fix it.

Geez..that's interesting. I've got an 09 with 7k on it and haven't had problem one. Maybe I should get rid of it an get an 08? Plus sounds like some creative license on the story above - if the electrode was melted how was the plug firing or how was the bike even running?

I've got an 09 FLHX with over 24.000K and it's the best all around touring bike I've ever had to date. No problems here.

No problems here. The 09's are great bikes. So are the 10's - just a little warmer in the pipes due to the cats and EPA.

He probably meant that the plug pulled the Aluminum threads out with the Plug... They should have let it cool longer .. Not surprising for some dealers. $20,000.00 bike, Now spend a little less on bolt on junk and Select your choice of tuners and Tune/Dyno the Bike and ride on.
