Angry Dying 08 Street Glide

I have an 08 Street Glide, purchased August 2008. Everything was great until July this year. I'm going down the highway 65 -70 mph and it just shuts off. I still had lights and all but it would not start until I shut it off for a few minutes. I thought maybe it was just a fluke of some kind. so I let it go. A few weeks later it happen again. The third time I took it to a dealer who kept it a week and could find nothing wrong or duplicate the problem. I drove it a few more weeks, it happens again and again every few weeks. Last time it happen I'm on a two lane highway, no shoulder, I had just passed a large truck and it shuts off. That truck just missed hitting me. I take it right back to the same dealer, they say nobody can look at for a week. A week later I took it to a different dealer who kept it another week. Guess what, can't find problem nor can they duplicate the problem. Called Harley customer service who say nothing they can do even though its on warranty. Has anyone else out there have any simular problems. The dealers are no help they just add on miles even though I let them know it only happens in the first 15 miles or not at all.

Safety issue here . HD says they can't help you ? ? ? If the engine is dieing while you're riding there should be codes . If it dies while driving and you have to cycle the ignition before it will restart I would look at the TSM / TSSM first because that is a symptom associated with the BAS . Do your turn directionals ever flash when you turn the ignition on ? That would be an indication of a stored historic TSM / TSSM code .
By the way ... Hi there !

Thanks, I brought up TSM and BAS they say there are no codes. I have accessed the diagnostics on the first reset and it just says - No Rsp, then when I let the computer reset it says - none. I told all this to the dealer he says that it means nothing. This morning it went out again, after almost laying it down in the soft dirt on the shoulder, I found just toggling the run start switch it will restart. I haven't noticed the turn lights flashing, because I always push the flashers on when it happens, I'll try watching next time. Thanks for the help.

To be fair, I work in the automotive repair industry and we run into things like this where the customer has a problem but we can't alway replicate it. It can be frustrating. I would say to contact HD direct again. Make sure not to hang up until you get a better answer.

I was just reading about this same problem...

they found it to be the run \ kill switch. corroded contacts and vibration caused the kill switch to engage (disengage?) and stop the engine but left all electrical on. Might also explain why there are no codes, as far as the bike is concerned you stopped it! I can't remember if the just cleaned the contacts of replaced the whole thing, but it's something to look at.

Repairs

Has your dealer checked the wire hardness or connections to the battery or voltage regulator?

When, I had my 07 HD Night Rod Special, I was having a lot of problems with the bike. I could count with two hands the many times that I spent in a Harley repair shop with no one ever knowing what the problem was. I remembered on one of those trips, I went the day before for a bike service and requested that voltage regulator be checked and I was told that it was fine. The next day I headed up to Vermont and the bike just died in the way into the gas station. I found the battery had ben leaking and in order to continue on, I had ask one of my friends to ride out to the Harley shop in Troy, NY to get me a battery almost two hours away around trip.... In the end on the next day it took a Harley dealership up North in Burlington, Vermont to finally replace the voltage regulator, after it over heated three batteries and left me stranded once. The frustrations was to much at times, specially when other people that are with you are made to wait for you. So, I found myself being loud with some of the staff members. Because, I just wanted my bike fixed.:

Kill switch would be the first thing I would check. No codes means nothing is wrong. Kill switch did what it's designed to do, just did it on it's own.
