Transmission Noise
I have an 07 Ultra Classic with 20k miles, air fither changed to K&N stock, and Bub 7 exhaust true duals only changes made.
Problem is when I let off the throttle I hear a whine that sounds like it comes from the clutch side of the tranny. It does this in all gears but 6th. It does get a little quiter after it warms up but not much.
Trans fluids and primary fluids are changed every 3k miles with the oil.
Any ideals? or just a noise Harley makes?

Sorry, Hi or Hey as we say in Ga, to all.
I'm from Georgia, been riding since I was 16, 45 now. own an 07 Ultra classic. First Harley in years, had a 76 sportster that left a bad taste and refused to own anouther.
Average about 15k miles a year on my bike and do all my own work on them.
Do custom woodwork ( or at least try to) for a living.

It's your auto-primary chain adjuster. It's normal. I have one in my 1995 and it does the same thing, as does my friend's 2002 RK that we dropped one in. Some stop whining after about 5000 miles, and others do it for their lifetime.

So whats the average life span of auto-primary chain adjuster?
Mine has been whining for the last 7000 miles.

I have a friend with 50K miles on his, and it whines louder then mine, and it's the original. I have about 3-4K on mine....
Lifespan is about 50-70K, or so for the relaceable pad. Some people have gotten more, or are getting more...The pad should be inspected at the 25K interval check-up, if I'm correct.
It automatically adjusts your primary chain, and keeps it within 1/4" of play, which is completely opposite of the theory that's been carried over by HD, that it needs 5/8-7/8" of play, which was the previous, manual adjuster spec.
I've run my primary chains on Big Twins at 1/2-3/4" play since the 80's and never had an issue, other then the whining, with no ill affects, excessive or premature pad wear, or heat issues. As a result, the bike was less jerky between shift and during lowe RPM operation, due to drivetrain play.
I wasn't thrilled about spending the extra $100 for the adjuster, but I was tossing in a primary chain at the time, and figured I'd try one myself, since I've installed ones for others.
You can see it here: http://www.harley-davidsonforums.com...r-install.html
