Use a nickle. Dave wrote some time ago about the use of a nickle to remove boot marks. I had a plastic bag hit my pipe. Rubbed the black shit on the pipe with the edge of the nickle and about 95% of it came off. It's easy but a little time consuming.

#0000 steel wool will take off almost anything burned onto your exhaust pipes and any other chrome, without hurting the chrome. Used it for years and it works fine.
Like anyother home recipe always satisfy yourself by using it in a rather hidden spot first to see how it works. It may be a good idea to let exhaust pipes cool before burning your hands on them first.

I use Gumout Carburetor cleaner on just about anything thats stubborn, spray it on a rag lay it on the stain for a few minutes wipe it off.

It works great for getting ink out of clothes, grease, crayons you name it cleans it off.

I will fall in here with my support for the use of steel wool to clean chrome. Just make sure it is the very fine stuff and not the course variety. Soften up the guts with a water soaked rag first and then you can probably whisk away the guts.
If you are unsure as to where to get the fine steel wool, try Lowes or Home Depot in the furniture finishing department. Wood finishers use it all the time to put the finishing touches on fine woods.
