New exhaust/map question.

I have read on this site that true dual exhaust systems have no back pressure, so you lose some torque and horsepower. If I purchase V&H header pipes and use my V&H basic slip ons, will that stop the horsepower/torque loss? I want to get the stage 1 download and new air cleaner as well. I am not a performance freak, so do I have to get a power commander or fuel pac? Will the standard map do the trick?

I have used the search. I see all kinds of threads with participants of the forum asking what kind of mufflers to get and what kind of fuel systems to add on. I simply want to know if I have dual header pipes and slip on mufflers, both from V&H, do I have to get a power commander or fuel pac? Will the regular stage 1/map let the bike perform without any ill affects? Any and all replies will be greatly appreciated. If I do not have to spend the money I see no reason to do so. Thanks in advance for the advice.

You do not have to get the power commander or fuel pak. The stage 0ne will work fine I have rhinehart true duals and big sucker w/stage one works just fine. The powercommander is the way to go if that is what you want that is my next step with 95" big bore and adj lifters and new cams. That is what I think

Thanks for replying. That is the answer I had hoped for. I have only been riding for a little over a year, and this forum has invaluable advice. Thanks again.

"True duals" means that you eliminate the "crossover" rear pipr that HD uses. And...now you have true dual exhaust.

A stage one remap should cover you. You're still adding fuel to the a/f ration, and not running it stock, with NO ADDED fuel, and aftermarket pipes.

If you go to an open type air filter, consider adding a fuel management system if for nothing else, to add more fuel, and prevent lean issues, over just a "canned map" from HD.

I just returned from Tecumseh Harley, armed with the info I have gleaned from this website, and what the mechanic told me was very different.

I told him I wanted to purchase V&H dresser dual header pipes, use my existing V&H slip ons, and get a stage 1 download with new air filter. The mechanic said the stage 1 map would not work, and the bike would run so lean with the 2 into 2 set up I would take a great chance in hurting the motor.

He said I had to get some kind of fuel management sytem. He said Power commanders basically "trick" the bike into adding more fuel at lower speeds and at higher speeds when you roll on the throttle, there is not the response you would expect. He would not put the V&H fuel pac on, saying it burns up the $400.00 ecm and voids the warranty on the bike. The only addition he would perform was a HD race tuner-along with the 3 hour charge for dyno work ($800.00).

Is this dude full of crap, just trying to make an additional buck for the dealer? Can I just get a stage 1 map minus the air cleaner, to increase the fuel mixture so the bike is not so lean? All my plans are on hold until I get more information. Help!

Wow...I guess everyone with a V&H fulel pak is in for a suprize, huh?

Dealer BS.

OF COURSE he'll sell you an HD tuner and Dyno time. For $700, you can get a Thundermax system and have a comletely self learing (and separate) ECU with true closed loop system.

These dealers are really feeding people bs just to sell their stuff......

It's my opinion that a Stage one download would make you and your bike happy. Not all the dealers are out to get you!
