Newbie and Neutral Trouble

I am the proud owner of a 2012 Road King Classic as of yesterday!!! I've never owned a Harley but I'm in love with this baby!!! I am having trouble getting into Neutral. When I lift the shift lever, it skips to second, then I lightly try to downshift, it goes to first. I know it's in the middle somewhere but it's HARD to find!!! Is this normal with a new bike? Thanks in advance!!!

I had the same trouble with my RKC. What really helped me was switching from the very thin Formula+ oil that HD puts in their transmissions and replacing it with heavy weight gear lube. I use Bel-Ray 85W 140.

Its a typical, minor problem with Harleys. My Ultra does the same thing

Part of it is technique too. I used to have quite a bit of trouble finding neutral. Occassionally I still do but not nearly like when I first got the bike. I have gone to heavier gear oil, but I think most of the improvement came from being familiar with the bike and better finesse with the left foot.

Me too, mine is an 08 Ultra. It is hard to find when stopped, yet super easy when rolling.

If I'm just rolling up to a fuel pump or parking spot I pop her into neutral before stopping. Some of your difficulty could be with your clutch adjustment.

Congrats on getting such a great bike.

With proper primary chain and clutch adjustment it should be fairly easy to find. You have to get nuetral from 1st gear only.......at least thats how my 99 RKC is.

Agree with HDS...seems I can find Neutral in my sleep from 1st gear, but it is a lot testier from second.

My manual actually says you have to hit nuetral from first only
