Yep I gave up and went that route. But I was having good luck with the Mr. Clean Magic Sponge.

Look in your wife's cabinet that has the cleaning stuff.
Look for Soft Scrub with bleach. She uses it for cleaning stains off sinks.

I use Comet first with a brush on the whole tire, then a SOS pad on the whitewall

I use the brillo pads on mine. Bleachy White will eat the finish on Aluminum.
