OK I found some examples, now I'll take opinions...
does blacking out the engine guard REALLY make it less of an eyesore?

Apologies to one2manybrewsky for using his pix as examples.

my bike is Vivid black, frame and skins, not blacked out but minimum chrome.

I know there are two different styles of engine guards. There is the longer swoopier version for forward controls and a much cleaner version for the mid controlled B's and D's. On a B or a D I dont think it matters if it's blacked out or metallic because those machines already have a mix of these parts. On a DX I would go with all black.
