Made my decision, New NRS

Ok, I've made my decision and started working with a dealer to purchase a new NRS. Actually if they find an 08 and offer a good deal I'm all over it. Any advice on what to ask for and what I should pay. With the company slowing production and needing to move bikes I'm hoping to get a good deal.

I'm going to get a black denim/vivid black racing stripe or vivid black/pewter pearl racing stripe depending on the deal and what they find. I want passage back rest but I want it small and possibly luggage rack.

So, what else should I look for? any suggestions on the back rest? What upgrades should I ask for? What questions am I not asking?

thanks

Excellent choice!

If you can swing it, get at least the front wheel replaced, that near solid wheel is like a sail in crosswinds, and even wobbled on me a bit at higher speeds (which went away when I got the new wheel). Replace it with something that has lots of air gaps. I have the Reactor wheels, but the F (Muscle) wheels are a cheaper alternative, as are just spokes..if you don't mind cleaning spokes...don't think they have black spokes though.

I ended up financing about 19 grand..but that's paying all of the new bike costs like shipping and assembly etc... When I was looking, there was an '07 with 1.6k miles for about 15 grand out of the door...but I wanted a 1250, not an 1130.

I can't help you with backrests, don't have one.

Another minor detail, if your state has inspection stickers, get them to put it on one of their black plates instead of the regular aluminum ones...it's minor, but I'm finding myself painting mine come inspection time this year.

And if you plan on changing your exhaust and intake, might want to consider getting a free dyno run, as well as putting in the Race tuner download in the ECM.

Oh yeah, see if you can get an LED replacement bulb for your tail-light, I've blown 2 regulars (3 if you count my blinker one) before going to an LED one in just a year...but that's a 13k mile year..plus a wreck.

dd36... An early congrats from another CO DX owner. It is a great bike for CO. Don't have much to add to Motive's post. An option... bring it home and during the break-in period see what you like, what you might want to change. Over two years here with the DX and I've only replaced the mufflers! Zero issues. Bike has been boringly reliable -- and I'm OK with that

I'm using Alberta Gals name to write. I am her husband, Wil. I have a DXA and I believe you will not be sorry for buying this bike. Me? I have a few changes I plan on adding to my bike in the future. I'm going with black engine guards because it will save money and protect my bike when I do something stupid and as sure as God made little green apples it will fall at some point.

Two, I ordered a Sundowner seat and a windshield before picking up the bike for those long iron butt rides I plan on taking. Nothing like comfort with a Sundowner and a windshield to prevent being beaten up by the wind on long rides.

Three, I'm 5'7" so I'll be going with reduced reach foot controls and perhaps at some point replacing the handlebar with a little more reduced reach bars.

Four, I need luggage bags if I plan to go anywhere at all. Right now I can't take anything at all and it me feel somewhat limited on travel or even a few minimal tools for those just in case moments out on the road.

Four, I will be ordering a sissy bar and backrest for more luggage for those long cross country trips you will take at some point if you plan on going anywhere outside your town or city at all.

Five, I will be ordering slip ons as the stock mufflers are very quiet. I'd like a little more sound so drivers I come up on can at least somewhat hear me.

Six, I'll be looking at fold up heel supports on my pegs for the long runs to cut tired legs.

Hope this helps thinking forward. Let us know how it goes and I wish you nothing but the best. And when you do get the NRS I ordered ABS brakes for mine which is what a DXA is. BTW, be a man and drive up to Canada and see some real Alberta mountains lad not those "hills" around your area. LOL!

Just some advice to the both of you, from my own experience....go with a slip on from the headpipes, not the midpipe.

I originally had slip ons at the end of the midpipe. They didn't have any mounting holes to mate with the stock exhaust support brackets.

At about 10k miles, my bottom slip on started rattling, of course it wasn't covered under warranty, after market part and not using the provided support brackets.

So I took it to a customs shop and had them weld the "nipple" that the mufflers clamp on to (which came free from inside the midpipe)....a few thousand miles later, the weld broke again...but in a different spot. The welder threw another bead on it, but I already decided to go another route. (once shame on you, twice...shame on me).

I got some money from an insurance check and bought a 2:1 that clamped onto the headpipes and haven't been happier since. Cut alot of weight off of the bike getting rid of the heavy ass stock midpipe as well.

In the end, I spent about 300 bucks for the original slip ons, another 40 bucks in welding,.....and another 500 bucks for the pipe I got now.

Save yourselves some money and skip expenses one and two.

What he said....

CFR is the best sounding pipe I've heard for the Vrod (better than the Indy IMO) and supposedly you also get a moderate performance gain, seeing as you stayed with a 2:1...but I haven't run on a dyno before or after changing the pipes, cleaner, and map...but it feels better on the throttle for sure...just gotta space it up so it doesn't scrape when you lean, as much.

It's not so much that it's loud, it's deep. Very very nice rumble at low RPMs, when you twist it, it let's you know...and everyone around you as well.

Good point on pipes

Great point on the pipes guys. I don't want overly loud to mess up my neighbors or anything just louder than waht I currently have. Suggestions?

I leave my neighborhood around 5-6am every day. I've also got a cop that lives in my neighborhood. Sometimes I come back late.

I keep the RPMs low in the neighborhood, and coast quite a bit, I'll run 3-4th gear around 20mph at times. I don't race up and down the street in my neighborhood either. It's low and it rumbles, but I don't have a lynch mob with pitch forks camped out on my front yard yet (knock wood). I don't race up and down the street in my neighborhood either.

V-girl has Thunderheaders I believe...they might be a bit quieter.

Don't mean to high jack your thread devildog

Thanks man. I'll have a look at the thunderheaders now. BTW, I'm also over in 1130 side of things but this side seems a lot more friendly than there. I will have to register here as well. My wife will not appreciate me using her handle to much longer and rightly so.

Devildog keep us up to date on how the purchase is going and when you expect to get your new wheels.
