Customs vs Choppers

It seems at times the line between customs and choppers gets blurred. A custom can be built from an existing bike or from the ground up and displays the builders concept of what a bike should be. A chopper is built from an existing bike that is chopped to alter the appearence and performance is increased. In recent years there have been customs and chopper replicas built that put all the emphasis on appearance while ignoring performance and reliability. I was in CA in the mid 60s and had the opportunity to view some of the Angels choppers and talk with the owners. These bikes were built to be radically different in appearence from a stock bike and the emphasis was on bottom end torque. As far as reliability, these bikes logged thousands of miles per year and in some cases were the owner's sole means of transportation.
