Primary Outer Cover Removal

Has anyone ever seen this before? I bought a 89 883 Hugger. I recently changed oil, oil filter, air filter, spark plugs, and I want to change the primary oil but I've not seen a cover like this on another bike. Is there a special tool? Any advise would help. Thanks

Probably, but it would be a specialty tool just for that. It looks like the smaller cover on the left has a slightly bunged edge from the tool used to tighten it. You should easily be able to make something like a big screwdriver from a piece of flat stock.

Yep, it's called a "Chevron" and Harley, aftermarket and others sell the tool. I use a chisel to knock it loose !

Yep, it's threaded ... unscrews in the normal direction too ! Use a blunt object in the groove and tap it with a hammer to the LEFT to loosen, to the RIGHT to re-install.
With the blunt tool at the top, not the middle ! Top left to loosen.
