In the Ride Planner, there is a dialog box where you can tell it to avoid things: tool roads, ferries, interstates, dirt roads.

slingshot is correct. You can't just enter a beginning or end point, it will take you the shortest route possible. Including dirt roads, oceans, rocks, etc. lol! You really have to look at your waypoint placement in the ride planner. They can be very touchy.

It took me through a very shady area of Memphis last week. Made me exit and get right back on but at 10:30 at night, it was a little weird/scary.

In some parts of the country, fun would not be the operative word!

In the Nav set up menu are avoidances. Check the ones you want to avoid (like Unpaved Roads). Then go get a good set of maps and plan your trip and don't use the system on your bike.
The system on our bikes is crap. I fought HD Navisystems for a year about this. The nav date base comes from Hungary!
I am not joking.
After I "Updated" my maps and software a couple of years ago on my '14 Ultra, I could NEVER trust it again. Well that's not entirely true. I could trust it to try and put me on dirt and it works inside of town limits to find pubs and restaurants. Sorry for the bad news........

Blessed beyond measure.
