Has anyone looked at the owners manual for the 22 Softail primary oil change? All documentation for all previous Harley's that i can find indicate that the primary fluid level gets filled to the bottom of the clutch plate. But if you're looking at the pictures in the new manual, the 2022's seem to have increased this level, all the way to the bottom of the clutch spring plate (the smaller round plate with the 3 screws/springs). If you drain and fill (Wet change) and add in the amount in the manual, 36oz, it fills to the bottom of the clutch plates (old recommended fill line), but to fill it to the bottom of the clutch spring plate as shown in the picture, you need another 8-10oz. Any thoughts?

Are the clutch plates smaller on this model? I wish i could post a picture to clarify but my work PC has too many restrictions. But I see what youre saying where its not quite at the spring plate in this picture. In the other models, the gap between the bottom of the clutch and the bottom of that spring plate is much larger, I think maybe that is what is confusing me. In this diagram is like 1/8th gap between them, on other models its like 1/2 inch, basically all the way down to the bottom of the gear ring.

Looking at the 2022 LRS owner's manual, it shows fill line is at the bottom of the clutch plates, not the spring plate.

Clutch plates are identical between my '21 LRS and your '22 LRS....

Same part numbers, everything. That picture is from your '22 LRS owners manual online on MoCo website.

No, it specifically calls out the bike needs to be flat, and not on the stand. The derby cover diameter is very small on this one, its the narrow black seal, not the large orange one. only about 2/3 of the clutch spring plate is over the bottom of the opening, so it wouldnt spill out if you filled to that level. Its just taking way more oil than i expected.

Killin me not being able to post a picture. But if you google Harley primary oil level and look at the images, i think you'll understand what I'm trying to say. Right away a 2018 Road glide diagram with the fill line and arrow shows up, you can see how much lower the clutch plate is from the clutch spring plate. If you search around all the manuals show a much larger gap. So i guess the 21/22 maybe even the 2020 LRS just have a new design. Whats throwing me off is how much oil it takes to get there. A wet fill calls out 36 oz, i know thats a rough number, but all i did was drain through the plug, and ive added almost 44 oz and still not up to that fill line per that diagram, i expect ill be almost a quart and half to get there. Thats more than the dry fill number.

It takes 1 qt. 1.5qts is WAY TOO MUCH!!!

Figured it out! As I suspected, the issue is with the diagram. This is not the correct picture for the bike. The bottom of the clutch plates is significantly lower than depicted here. This is showing the bottom of the clutch disc just barely below the spring plate with the 3 screws. It is not. The proper fluid volume as indicated brings the level to the bottom of the clutch discs way further down in the case. After draining off about the same amount of oil that was added over the specified 36 oz, the level was just about at the bottom of the clutch disc. So although the wording was techinally right, the picture is very much wrong. Thank you all for the responses!

No, its the diagram that is incorrect. If you open one up and compare what is physically there versus the picture depicted, the picture is clearly wrong. I am speaking only to the '22 LRS, the manual clearly spells out temp and to be level, not of jiffy stand. All this is correct. The picture shows the gap between the bottom of the sping plate and the bottom of the clutch incorrectly. The diagram leads you to believe the level is almost at the bottom of the spring plate, even though it says clutch plate. The clutch plate is significantly lower in the case than as depicted in relation to the spring plate.

Well if I could post pictures, im sure you'd understand what im saying. There are diagrams out there for 2018 models that accurately reflect what is on the '22 LRS, wish they just used that instead. The diagram in the manual is very innacurate to what is physically there. Hopefully this thread will help the next guy!
