Still trying to help my neighbor Tom with his bike. Got his new electronic ignition installed thanks to members on this forum, but now have a turn signal issue.
Yes, I did a search on this issue before I posted, but component identification on his bike has me stumped.
Both rear turn signals suddenly stopped working. Front turn signals work fine. Replaced both bulbs in the rear turn signal and they still don't work. Wires look good. Bulb sockets look good.
(Be advised that I am working from a Factory Service Manual for the 1997-1998 Heritage Classic Softail models, but I don't have the Owner's Manual for his specific bike. Some things in this FSM don't look like what I'm seeing on his bike.)
FSM shows that the bike should have a turn signal control module that looks like this:
This is supposed to be located somewhere between the rear fender and the oil tank. However, I can't find anything that looks like this on his bike in that spot.
What I find at that location looks more to me like a voltage regulator, but I could be wrong. Here's a picture:
So, I'm not sure exactly what this component on his bike is.
Also, I checked the relay box under the seat of his bike. Here's a picture of that:
That large square relay looks more like the typical turn signal flasher that I'm used to seeing, but it could be a relay for something else. Plus, the FSM says there is no flasher unit.
At this point I'm stumped because I can't positively identify these components, so it's hard to move ahead with troubleshooting the turn signal issue.
Would greatly appreciate the advice of forum members to get me on the path to fixing the rear turn signals for him.
(I've been wrenching on bikes for over 50 years, but I'm a Harley rookie, so be easy on me.)
Thanks.
