I'm a little confused. are the lower designed to benefit the rider or the engine. I was told to keep them open in the summer, more wind on rider, helps cool hot running V twin.

Designed to benefit rider especially in cold weather keeping air off lower legs and feet.
I only run with mine closed when temps are below say 40 degrees otherwise opened.

They also keep your feet dry. I haven't noticed much difference on engine temp.

A little of both. Closed, they tend to keep cold air off your legs, along with rain and kinda directs air throught the engine so
It kinda works like a heater for the passenger. And on hot days you gotta open them up unless you want to bbq your calves......
