2014 Ultra Radio Boom audio.

I bought my 2014 Ultra about three weeks ago. Don't know what to think about this radio yet. I have the smaller standard 4.3 box. It has most of the functions of the 6.5 box. Bought an intercom head set to use phone options and can't get the voice commands to work at all. Read manual and played with it for an hour or more. I have the plug in intercom which has to be used with a wire connection. Can't use a Bluetooth headset because Harley didn't think to design it that way which would only make sense. I can get calls in and manually make called out using the phone book with contacts by physically scrolling through but no voice commands. I've checked all the settings and just don't know. Also my clock goes blank for a while then comes back on randomly. My music downloaded on my phone plays through the Bluetooth but sometimes its so low I can't hear it even with volume all the way up and last I get some crackling in the speakers especially if the station is a little fuzzy. Don't know if its user error or if I'm missing something but its getting real annoying real fast. Read a lot of reviews about the radio and its not sounding too good. Is this radio crap or what.

Not a single response, can anyone with the boom 4.3 at least tell me if the voice activation is supossed to work on this model because i cant get it to work at all. I figured out all the other stuff, just cant get the voice commands to work. Dont know if its user error or if this feature is only on the 6.5 model. I dont believe its my head set because i can manually make phone calls by scrolling through the menu of contacts and pressing the one I want. Any help would be nice. I read the manual and it does not specifically tell you for the 4.3.
P.S. I dont know if there is a specific setting my shone must be on for this voice activation to work. I am using an android phone. I cant find a single thing anywhere about trouble shooting this. Dealers dont seem to be too familiar with the whole thing unless they own one themself.
There is a thread about the "blue tooth" not working on all phone because of the programing .

Just looking at the HD web sight at a the Street Glide with the 4.3 Boom Box and VR doesn't show up. But when you look at the Street Glide Special with the 6.5 it's on there. Looking at the Ultra it says the VR is optional. So I'm guessing that it is not an option with 4.3 or you need to add something to have it. I have the limited and while its a pain all I have to do is just hit the button the get VR to pop up. Hope this helps. No sure why other guys with teh 4.3 haven't piped in to let you know it they have it or not.
Thanks for the info, I was starting to think that it was not an option as well. I don't know why they would set it up on the controls just to find out it doesn't work on this model. Not a big deal, I feel better knowing its not an option other than its just not working. The funny thing is it gives you all the options and talks to you as well such as when you hit the button it tells you to say a command but then nothing happens. Oh well. Anyone else with the 4.3 radio can chime in at anytime to confirm this.

Did that many times and I am quite aware about doing a search but that did not reveal any answers to my questions and concerns but thank you for the info.

Please read this thread Sir; http://www.harley-davidsonforums.co...m-6-5-system-wont-work-bluetooth-headset.html

Not using a blue tooth headset, I'm using a hard wired headset which plugs into the port supplied on bike. That article is in regards to trying to link a sena or other type of wireless Bluetooth headset to work with the bike which will not work due to the Bluetooth format not supporting the frequency. My concerns were why the VR was not working and it now looks like it is only operational on the larger 6.5 boom audio model. I do appriciate the info, thanks.
Not busting your chops but maybe your dealer has a youngster there that can give you the 101 on that 4.3 and kinda confirm if you're doing it right or wrong, or find a competent local stereo guy and have them help you problem solve. if you can get some insight into the system you might decipher if you have a problem, I suck at all this new stereo type stuff so that's where I'd start.
I have 14 SGS with 6.5 boom three months later and I'm still figuring it all out. I've had the most luck sitting on bike in driveway with radio manual and going page at a time trying every feature. I was fortunate that my salesman was well versed and I got a good start. Good luck!
The Boom Box Bluetooth feature sux big time. Forget it. Also the VOX for intercom is worthless as well. I just use the PTT button and trained my wife how to use it. Just crank up the volume and use the speakers and use PTT for intercom. There's no other solution. Also the GPS system sux. You can't see a damned thing unless you're riding at night.

Just my $.02.

I figured out the radio and do not have the voice activation on this model. The manual does not make it very clear weather or not it has certain functions on the 4.3. The manual is based around the 6.5 model. It states may be equipped with, not equipped with. Anyway age is not a factor, I am up to date with today's technology and am tech savey enough to figure out most things, just reaching out to someone with the same model can save you time and effort sometimes. That's the great thing about the forum. There is really no such thing as local stereo guys anymore, that's a thing of the past around here. Plus this is model specific information unless its the dealer or another Harley owner they most likely won't know. Another thing is the question was not really how to use the radio, that's easy enough, its if the radio model supported the function of the voice activation or not being that it is equipped with the push button feature on the handlebar and actively engages the function, just does not complete the function. In other words push the button and bike responds by saying say a command but does not respond to an actual command due to this function not being supported by the 4.3 model. They should have left the push button off this model so there would not be any confusion.

That actually clears it up for me on your issue. as I have not looked at thr Rushmore rides yet, but plan to soon, I'll be taking a harder look at its operation.
uscgmac,

I didn't know you have the same radio that I have on my SG. I though you had the 6.5". We never discussed radios (that I recall) when we met but since you didn't have the Harley that day, who remembers?

What I seem to remember from others on these forums is you must use a Harley headset (i.e., Harley part #76572-09) to get things working if you want to communicate through the radio but that headset has relatively bad reviews right on the Harley website. I know of a few riders with SGs that have installed the 7-pin DIN plug just to get things working for them. Your bike, as you mentioned, has that plug already. We need to get our two bikes together and compare and discuss what works and what doesn't work since our radios are the same. I, too, have an Android phone but I don't use it through the Harley radio since I don't have the required Harley headset.

uscgmac, Interested in getting together this weekend to continue this thread face to face?

Call Suffolk Harley kid behind counter lot of knowledge went to school with my kid!I myself don't have any electronic extras!Good luck!
Thanks guys, i do have a head set with the seven pins. its not the Harley one but it does work well with phone calls. I can set it up to hear music or phone through the head set so I know the head set is working properly, it just doesnt let you make voice activated commands such as when promted to say a command it does not pick up on voice. There is an icon which lights up when this feature is being used and my 4.3 does not have that icon so I know now that it does not activate on my model. I rarely use the head set anyway. I just bought it as a novelty to try out, thats why I got the 30.00 one on ebay which works just fine. Streetglide, as for this weekend I wont be able to make it out untill the afternoon on sunday but maybe I might run into you. Looking foward to talking shop about the bikes and going over stuff one of these days.

2014 Ultra Boom Audio

Another Boom Audio issue. Mine worked fine for 23 months, but now drops from USB to FM after riding...also resets Fade. In August HD said it was software, but running latest. Then they said it should do this as normal, but can't explain why it took 23 months to go normal. Also cannot explain why if normal, it is NOT universal. Spoke with Case Manager last week, he told me system is sensing incorrect voltage when going to sleep/shutdown mode. He stated they do not have root cause, nor do they know where it gets bad voltage from. Last Thursday local HD tech informed me they opened ticket, and were told software problem. Been at this for 3 and 1/2 months; replaced once with refurbished unit from CNA, then tried unit out of 2015 model and replaced USB cable, but no improvement. Anyone else having ongoing issues like this???

Mine does the same but started after I rode in a huge rain storm. I think I have water in the handlebar controls.

I bought a set of illuminated controls and will use diletric grease when I put it back together.
