3rd gear catching inconsistently. Any ideas as to what might be wrong?

Hi, my names Malakai, new to the forum. I ride an 04 FXD with a 95 cubic inch screaming eagle upgrade, Baker 6 speed, yada yada. Anyway, I raced a crotch rocket off the line the other day and as my torque monster and i were putting the suzuki in the rear view mirror, i shifted into third i felt what i can only describe with my minimal engine knowledge as a jerking motion. It sounds as if something is spinning and grinding, and the bike will jerk forward as it accelerates, but if i don't get a fist full of gas (which is boring as ****) it doesn't do it as much. I've read on some other forums that i could be the dog teeth of the transmission being worn down?

My questions are
1. what else could it be? broken clutch plate? (i just replaced the clutch disks less than 8 thousand miles ago)
2. Besides a primary lock drive tool, what other specialty tools will i need to disassemble the engine?
3. will a JIMS Diaphragm Clutch Spring Compression Tool, allow me to take the disks out of the clutch basket?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated as i sold my cage and only roll on two wheels as my main transportation.

I'm having the same problem. Seems this is a Harley defect that should be recalled. I've noticed on other forums that a lot of people are having the problem of accelerating in 3rd gear and the bike jerks like it is not getting fuel, spark plugs not firing or the belt is skipping. My bike is a 2019 with around 10,000 miles. This is turning me away from Harley. This problem sucks
Legend has it Malakai is still out here dragging Crotch rockets in the 1/4 mile with his torque monster while still having trouble with 3rd gear and absolutely refuses to buy another cage

Also Darvin's 2019 6spd is a helluva alot different than a Baker 6spd ! SO IMO Darvin isn't having the same problem as Malakai's '04.

On my bike it is the Cat teeth, not dog, that makes it smooth shifting like a buttered up Yoga instructor's azz screaming for more....wait......I probably shouldn't have said all that. Nevermind....nothing to see here....move along....:p

Dude I don't need your criticism. I'm having problems 3rd gear jerking, same even though its a different year. If you can't help, stay off my post Then again maybe I'm on a bad site, after reading the responses

And it’s not just a different year. It’s a different animal altogether.
I got honorable mention! I feel special!

Okay, I'm gonna give this site a second chance; even though it is a different year and a different animal, the problem comes out to be the same symptoms as the person that started this thread. I've checked a lot of forums and a lot of people have this problem even though it is a different year and different Cubic inch.

I'll even listen to the goofballs and trumpers if you can help. Thanks

Another example of what I mentioned before about FNGs going full Gomer Pyle for no reason.

A Baker 6 speed transmission is a completely different transmission than the Harley trans. Schmidty wasn't criticizing anything, just stating that the cause and solution is likely way different given that they're different transmissions.

Even then, we don't owe anything to anyone or have to help with anything. This isn't a customer service help desk, if you don't like it, pay a mechanic to take a look.

As to the rest of this crap... I've never really heard of Harley motorcycles or 6 speeds in general having issues with third gear in particular other than when people rag out their bikes riding like morons and blow up their transmission popping wheelies in third gear or something or trying to drag race on a transmission not made for that.

It's probably not a broken clutch. If it was a clutch problem, it would probably have issues shifting to ANY gear, not specifically one gear.

The most likely problem is within the transmission itself. If it's only one gear that's a problem, then the issue could be a bent, damaged or worn shift fork or the gear itself could have some broken teeth or something. It could also be user error of shifting in too early and lugging. If there's a grinding noise, definitely suspect a broken gear or something.

There's not really anything else that can be said about it without tearing into the transmission and seeing what's wrong.

I knew it ! ! ! OP is up to the challenge !

Maybe if I clear up some of the differences of a stock Harley 6spd versus a Baker 6spd Mr. Darvin might understand that symptoms aren't always symptomatic between similar drivetrain components from different manufactures.

Back to Mr. Darvin's original complaint about the 3rd gear space he's encountered with his 2019 stock Harley 6spd trans. He's seen posts about similar complaints at other Harley forums and decided to check here for answers.

Actually this is the first I've heard of this particular complaint from any other forum or source ! So other than what I've already commentated to, I ain't gotta clue ! ? Maybe some of the other HDF members have something to add because I ain't no guru !
