Just bought a 86 Sportster and the turn signals are not flashing and I need to fix them for a inspection and my safety. Can someone tell me the location and what it looks like. I bought a replacement and it is round. Are the old ones square and under the seat?

Can't remember where it is, but I do remember it's a simple round 2-prong flasher relay. Most likely either under the seat or near the battery.

My '87 XL flasher was under the seat. AND, I had to hold the button in on the signals. Self cancelling signals came out in '91 (subject to much debate).
Badlands sells a $30 device that keeps the blinkers on for 10 seconds or so.

found flasher

Found the signal flasher in the headlight housing. I removed the headlight and it was behind the light.

I have a genuine H-D service manual for 1986 to 1987 Sportsters. It is in very good condition and I have no use for it anymore. If you'd like to have it I'd mail it to ya for $5.00 to cover postage.

Shoot me a PM if you want it.
