I stumble upon this while searching for something else. I don't know if this was ever posted before...I did a search and couldn't find it so here it is.

This is why you should always lock the ignition on your bike.

I knew that the locking mechanism came out like that. I had to take it out when I removed my inner fairing for painting. It just never occurred to me that someone else might come up and take that as an act of vandalism when the bike was sitting.

It's not true that you couldn't start your bike though. With that barrel lock mechanism out, you can stick anything down in there and turn the electrical portion of the ignition. You could do it with a screwdriver if you had one in your tour pack, or just about anything that would fit in there and would catch could be used to turn the ignition to the run position.
