Any tips on how to relace a rim...

1454 Views 8 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  tlg1100
Just bought the wife some whitewalls, and she wants to powder coat the rims and hubs on her slim. I am sure I can take the spokes off and get the rims powdercoated, but how hard is it to re-lace the stock rims myself? any tips would be greatly appreciated...

I would suggest finding a good shop for this work.

Take a look at some youtube on subject such as

Having relaced a few in my time all I can say is take your time. You can make a trueing stand out of 2×4's or anything else. Just make sure it's level
I've watched a few vids on lacing, im confident I can do that, the truing well that's a whole different story...
Relacing a rim can be a absolute nightmare. Guys that know how to do it, make it look easy. Guys that don't, throw tools.... :laugh
Harbor freight has a motor cycle wheel balancing stand. That would probally work and you could use a quick square for a straight edge. To check for run out or clamp a piece of steel to one of the up rights

This stand is 39.99 At Harbor Freight

That's a good find. A dial indicator is essential too.

In truing a rim...remember the rule is to work with 5 spokes at a time .
When you first rough it in, make sure you don't get it out of round first . :)
My cousin used to do it back in the day, doubt he does now. I remember the time he had with his first one :what? Then he got into it and got fairly good and quick... had lots of people wanting him to do some twisted spokes and colored spoke
Heard it ain't to bad once you get into it and know what yer doing..good luck and if you do it..post some pics :thumbsup
