I've got a blown bulb and am looking for a brighter alternative to the stock 881 style bulb. It appears that a 898 bulb will fit and is a 37 watt bulb as opposed to the 27 watt 881 and also draws an additional 2 amps. Has anyone had any experience with a higher watt bulb. I'm concerned about possible excessive heat and wire damage. Thanks.

I have noted in my files from other forums & discussions that 37.5 watt is ok, 50 watt is too bright/hot.

27 watt bulb at 12 volts should draw about 2.25 amps. The 37 watt bulb draws 3.08 amps. Should not be a concern. The circuit is fused by a 15a fuse, so both lamps drawing 5.33a is way within limits.

If that is truly the only load on the circuit...

Add 5 more amps for hi beam (4.5 for Low). Still within limits.

I'd love to do the Socal HID setup but shouldn't right now. So I'll give the 898's a try and let ya'll know if anything blows up. Thanks again.

Got the 50watt led passing lamps from Socal also. Had the HID but it didn't light up all the time. So switching to LED headlight from Fuel moto. Put one in my Sportster and it works great. Setting the wife's trike up with the same.

I see you have an 09 FLHT...I went down the same road with my 08...went to the 898s for the passing lamps and was happy with the results. Also put in the PIAA 100/110 lamp in the headlight. I didn't want to go all the way to 50w in the passing lamps due to concerns of frying the connectors, as some had reported.
