Battery tender question

3798 Views 29 Replies 17 Participants Last post by  LYNYRD SKYNYRD
Been off of HD's for ten years and feels good to be back. Please don't judge me too harshly as I did ride BMW's during that time and they treated me well. I always kept them on a battery tender and all that was required was to plug it into an accessory outlet. Is that ok on the 2014 Ultra? Manual just talks about the connecter inside the side panel but it seems a tad easier to just "plug it in'"? Any thoughts?

I keep mine on a tender whenever not in use.
There should be a pig tail for the battery tender on the right side below the saddle and distal to the oil reservoir.

I bought my battery tender from my dealer, but you can also get them online.

I use mine through the winter or when I wont be riding for more than a week.
If the accessory socket is hot all the time( key off) then yes you can plug it in there. Make sure the polarity is correct. If not there may be a pigtail already installed, dealers often install one, or you can install one yourself.
The service department told me that if I kept the pigtail plugged into a battery tender the battery would last longer. I also have seafoam in the tank if I am not ridding regularly. And about every third tank.

Thanks everyone for your replies! I did find the harness for the tender as my dealer set it up on the LH bag guard. I was wondering if anyone was using the accessory socket instead. Appears the safe bet is to use the harness.
I have a 2014 Street Glide, and it too, has the battery pigtail on the left side behind the side cover. I took it out and it now resides along side the seat kept in place by the seat strap. I use it all the time with my Battery Tender.

The accessory outlet gets turned off with the ignition switch so you cannot use that. Take advantage of what Harley provided and use the pigtail. It does what it's intended to do.
Charging harness and tender

My bike didn't come with one, so I added a charging harness. Peeks out from under the saddle, right side, where it's zip-tied to the frame. Use it for the battery tender in winter. On the road I've charged my cell phone, iPod, and GoPro with it.

Fat City where did u get the set up to charge other things thru the pig tail? I'd like to see that if you have a pic.

I have some electric gauntlet gloves - bought from HD dealer. They are so warm, I haven't hooked them up, but I wonder if I could use the battery tender pig tail.

Has anyone tried that? (I haven/t checked to see if the plugs are compatible yet)

Flying tiger thanks this could be my answer to the wife getting power to her phone. Tried power point in the trunk and that ate thru two cables. Right now I have her plugged up in the power point in the fairing and then got a 4 ft cord to run back to her. But is always in my way.

I use an Optimate USB charger for mine - plugs straight in, converts to to the 5v USB feed and has a built in monitor to switch off if the battery gets too low to start the bike so you can leave it connected without the bike running.

I live in LA so can ride year round and have never had the need for a tender which is lucky because I live in a condo and there are absolutely no outlets in the garage.

Been in an accident recently and may not be able to ride for a month or more.

Anyone have issues with removing the battery entirely and connecting it to a tender in the house?

That'll work just fine.
