hi All i am new to this forum and have just aquired a harley chopper with an 1983 shovelhead motor bike was partly in bits now complete problem i have its blowing a 20 amp fuse when i connect the battery positive i have disconnected every thing exept the regulator rectifier lead and it still blows the fuse so the problem seems to be in the charging system the stator checks out with no shorts and the rectifier tests ok when i connect the lead to the battery there is a spark when they touch am i missing something here? i assume the regulator is earthed through the body to the frame maybe false readings from the stator/? thanks in advance for any info

Should have a 20 amp breaker instead of the fuse.
Disconnect the battery cables and test the positive side (red) and negative ground (black) with a multimeter set to ohms. Disconnect wiring until the meter shows open circuit, the last thing disconnected is the problem circuit.

If it's a chopper the wiring is probably chopped and Sliced or modified . Its a hunt a search game now start tracing wires and see if any thing is rubbed thru or pinched and grounded out . What was the last things you did to the bike start looking every where you have touched it and go from there . check at grip mounts and Ignition switch
