Cam Chest Upgrades . . . .

I'm torn . . . Trying to decide how best to achieve my goal of making my bike as reliable as possible. I have a 2018 Street Glide, so I know it has some flaws that I need to deal with . . . I already added the primary vent, and also a tranny vent. I'm also working on venting the breathers to the outside of the airbox to stop all that crud getting pulled back into the motor. I added an S&S aluminum intake manifold and a Screamin' Eagle radiator fan (which works great) and I now have Tab Performance no-cat headers and V&H Eliminator Duals, with a Dynojet PV4 Tuner.

I'm not really interested in making the thing rip or scream, I'm a boring rider, I love cruising and I don't ride like I stole it. I just want it to run well and not leave me stranded someplace.

So here's the dilemma . . . I know I should replace the oil pump, which I'll do myself, but I'm trying to decide if I should also do the lifters, push rods and tappet cuffs at the same time? Are those things really an issue? Lifters and tappet cuffs are simple, but I'm a bit nervous about doing the rods, they look easy to screw up!

I'm also trying to decide which oil pump to go with? I was originally looking at the S&S, but now I'm looking at the Screamin' Eagle one with the cam plate, which I hear is much more forgiving if the runout is not perfect. I did order a runout measuring tool, which might make the decision for me.

I'm not doing a Cam, so the rest of the cam chest stays as is.

Any words of wisdom would be welcome.

Thanks

How many miles are on the bike? If it is around 20K, I’d certainly consider a set of lifters and push rods just to do them while you are in there. If you are not getting upwards of that mileage or choose not to replace them, just make note of their location and return them to where you pulled them from. If choosing to keep the stock lifters and pushrods you’ll have to pull the rocker box covers as well. Your call on that?

May I ask what is driving you to replace the oil pump? I personally wouldn’t bother with cracking into the cam chest if it’s not necessary.
