I just got my new tachometer in the mail today and found out it needs a different connector to fit the one on my bike. I saw that there is another set of wires that came out of the old tach. I want to see if I can change the connector on the 06 tach to fit a 96 sportster.

I am not sure about the Sportster, but on a big twin, a 2006 tach would not work with a 1996.

The modern tachometer uses a digital input signal off of the ECM rather than a analog signal like the old ones. But again, that's with the big twins. I am unclear on the sportsters.

I just went through this tach thing on my 06 RK cop bike. Up to 03 or 04 uses a three wire tach, later models use a 7 or 8 wire tach. I really don't know anything about a Sportster, so I don't know if this helps or not. Good luck.

The new tach would use the Molex connector. Special crimper to install the terminals onto the wires so the terminals will fit into the connector correctly.
Molex connectors were introduced in the 2007 model year except on Buells.
