You must make a proper clutch throw out adjustment in the primary cover before adjusting the clutch cable adjustment. The procedure is in the manual. If you don't have one you should get one. Un adjust the cable first then remove the primary adjustment cover to make the adjustment there. What year and type bike are we talking here as some are different than others.

 

Usually, that's because you have the cable adjustment too tight. Do you have about a nickel's thickness of free play in the lever?

Sounds like you have to into the Primary to adjust the clutch basket and the n the cable . There's Stickys in the forum section at the top of the page . This were A Harley Davidson Service manual comes in Handy for these kind of adjustments . Good luck let us know how you make out
