Can anyone tell me if the cases were changed in the late 84 model? I have a 81 and stripped the timing plug threads and have an opportunity to get a set of late 84 cases fairly cheap. I know I could have the hole fixed but I also have another leak that needs tending to. New cases will solve my problems quicker and cheaper. I appreciate any help.

If its a late 84 shovel case its an fxr shovel (till 85 I think) than yes. Evo and shovel lowers look the same but the shovel has jugs that bolt to the case on short studs, and evo has long studs that go the jugs and the heads bolt on. Different bolt pattern i believe. The cost to rework would be less than fixing what you have. Another reason to fix what you have is the VIN, but if your vin doesn't match the frame than no biggie.
