Hey fellas,

I'm Alex and I just picked up my first Harley. It's a 1995 sportster 883. The engine is supposed to be a replacement or something, I don't think it's original.

Here's the serial number. *CAPV229327*

If anyone could help, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks.

It's stolen. Harley only used that SN in high crime areas.

Does CAPV229327 match the last 10 digits of your frame VIN?

That is not a normal HD VIN. Where on the engine is it located?
Maybe an aftermarket casting number if the cases were replaced?
What sort of paperwork did you get with the bike? How is the bike titled. Useed, salvaged, wrecked?
Title laws vary by State. Am curious to see what our VIN ID Guru`s have to say.

Its a normal engine number....

CAP = XLH 1200 engine.

That's why I asked if it matched the frame VIN....

If the frame also says CAP, it isn't a 883.

If the frame says CEM, or CFM in that spot in the VIN, the motor was swapped out from a 1200 donor bike.

Thanks a lot for the quick response! Can you tell the year of the engine?

My bike has CFM.

:whistle
I stand corrected. :notworthy

Just never recall seeing any engine VINS beginning that way.
But very few dealings with Sportsters.
Sounds like maybe a bit of a frankenstin`ed bike?
OP was told it was an 883.
Engine was a replacement\swap for what ever reason?

Seriously,Thanks. Still learning....and trying to remember after all these years.

@ 95Alex. This may help too. Harley VIN information
Sporties are towards the bottom.
