Hmmm.... if my bores mic out am I ok to just hone and replace rings? I have always replaced the pistons too, but do I need to ? I can mic them too, correct?

But is it a good idea? The bike has 20k on it. Air cooled Yamaha XS-650.

On that same note, I don't have access to a valve spring compression tester. On a low performance engine like the XS-650 can I just measure spring height?

This is kind new, coz I have in the past only taken engines apart that I was going to throw a lot of parts at. Not much of a mechanic, but fairly competent parts changer guy.

And I have two manuals, so I have all the tables of measurements.

Any ideas for a cheap freshen up are appreciated.

With only 20k miles, I can't see that there would be anything wrong with the springs. I don't think I would personally worry about those if you are going with stock cams.

Again with the pistons on a 20k motor, if the bores and pistons mike out ok, I say run em.

Just my 2c.

Other than cleaning up the carbon deposits, do I need to scuff up the pistons or just put them in as-is?
