Pulled the front forks on my street glide to change the springs. Took top cap off, pulled the stock spring & turned fork upside down to drain oil and a part fell out. It's round with a rod sticking up with a small spring attached to it. Which way does it go back in? Tried to check the other fork carefully, but it fell out too.

Sounds like the damping valve. Round end in first, spring up.
Find your year/model on the link, look under "oem parts finder" in the orange bar on top of page, enter yr/model, then open suspension, front forks.
