I recently bought a 2004 heritage. The fuel gauge goes up to full when started and drops to empty when turned off. Looked like it worked ok. Yesterday it stopped running as I was cruising down the highway. Couldn't figure out what was wrong and so had it towed home. Gauge read close to full and you could hear some gas sloshing in the tank. Found out it was because there was next to no gas in the tank. Enough to make a noise but not enough to keep it running. Expensive lesson learned - the gauge doesn't work.

I have read that there was a tech bulletin put out that says a ring on the float gets hung up and makes it read full all of the time. It talked about how they took it to the shop and they grinded the ring down for around $160 and hadn't had any problems since.

Has anybody else experienced the same issue? Was it the float?

My old Super Glide taught me that same lesson, showed a 1/4 tank...bone dry. Mileage is the way to go. On my current SG I start looking around 170 miles...
