So here's a curious question. I've put a deposit on a 2015 SGS for which I can't do paper work and take delivery until September. I'm transferring across country and figure I'll purchase when I get moved. I put the deposit down because I don't know what colors HD will offer in 16' and I really love the Denim Black and don't want to miss out on getting new. I can move my deposit to a 16' or a different bike if I want, which I don't plan to.

So here's the curious question, with 16's coming out in Aug/Sept how much can I get knocked off MSRP or have extra's thrown in?

BTW this is my first HD, I'm coming from the knee dragging world.

Thanks.

Not sure how to answer this....Are they holding the bike for you till September? If so, I doubt they will move on a discount seeing that they are paying interest on the bike. If you're hoping they still have a denim black in September, they may do something to get it off the floor for more inventory. I wouldn't expect much, the SGS is a hot bike right now.

Good Luck and thanks for your service.

It completely depends on the dealer and their inventory at the time. It could be nothing at all.

Did you say you put a deposit down on a new bike....but you don't have any paperwork stating the purchase price? Why should they give you ANYTHING off of MSRP?

They have 2 Denim's, if 1 sells and they only have 1 left then my $500 reserves it for me. The kicker is I can move it to another bike if I change my mind, whether it be an RG or a SGS 16' model. So I'm not "locked" into that particular bike.

Being a hot item I'm not expecting the world, but I also know if I don't get a gauge of what others are getting, then I won't even know what, if anything can be done i.e. MSRP etc. I do know bikes have less room than cars for a profit margin.

That's something you probably need to negotiate now.

No paperwork because I can change my mind for a different model or the 16' or I can just turn it into a gift card for the wife. But they have 2 some I have some time but because they can and do move fast if 1 sells then the other is reserved for me. So yea they are taking a risk holding the bike, but I am serious about purchasing the bike so I'm pretty sure when the time comes they will not want to lose a sale in Sept on a 15' model. So it's in their best interest but I'm not going to try and force a deal that I know they can't do. This is why I am asking whats the current norm, so much of MSRP or a certain amount for accessories. Being empowered with this knowledge will help make the transaction smoother. I don't want to be "that" guy who's at the dealership haggling over $500-$1000 off MSRP for 8 hours when thats not even in the cards.

I would say it all depends on how many bikes they have in stock. I know between my two closest dealers, they have 4 Steet Glides between them. So I doubt there will be any hold over 15's at these dealers.

My local dealer, Toadsuck Harley in Conway Ar says they take MSRP, add $1000 plus shipping and that is the price. I was looking at a new Sportster two years ago, salesman said If I didn't buy it some else would, he then just walked off. I pay cash for my toys to that wasn't even an issue. You might have some leeway on a trade in but otherwise you can exect to pay the asking price in this area. Good luck in negotiating for a good price.

I bought a clean used sportster from an indy and have put about 14K miles in two years, also about the same miles on my Honda during the same time frame. I have done some reliability upgrades to my sporty and plan to keep it awhile. I just turned 69 a few days ago so I don't ride as much as I once did.

I don't know about your area but on a 2015 now I would say nothing
you might get something at end of year if they still have the bike you want
you might try to negotiate labor and parts for any accessories you want or extended warranty or free service labor

Codger, personally, if a salesman told me what he told you, I'd have created a draft as I hit the door. If they don't want to work with you on a price you both can live with, there are lots of dealers out there who will. Keep looking.

I did leave but only after making a couple of comments to other staff. BTW that salesman didn't last long after that, word got around I guess. I only go there to buy parts from time to time. I am not in the market for a new bike at this time but who knows.

Oh, nearly forgot, I made an offer on a Dana Low about 6 months ago, we were so far apart on price I just told the salesman to forget it. He was a nice guy, far different than my first encounter with sales at that store. Since then I put a Barnett clutch on my sporty, just put a Memphis shades "big top" windshield on it as well. I have new tires with "ride on" balancing fluid in both. I just put new organic EBC brake pads on the front, much better brakes now. I finally have it so it is much more comfortable on the road so I'll keep it for a while.

Wow, I had the local HD call me 3 times to get me to come in and make a deal, promising me gift cards and accessory incentive!

The first time he said straight up, it the last day and the sales manger wants some bikes gone!

Are they always like this on the last day?

Every car/bike/truck/boat salesperson you talk to will have one or more reasons why you should buy now--regardless of what day it is.

Here in Suffolk County NY the dealer took nothing off the MSRP when I bought my bike new last year. They did throw in a V&H exhaust, Stage 1 Air Kit and the FP3, but took nothing off the sticker.

How much is the dealer prep for a new bike?. That should be negotiable in itself. Local HD here want $1000 for prep. What do you guys see?
