Butch, there are some people here who can be a huge source of knowledge (SCHMIDTY for 1). There are others who might know some things but will never admit that they can be wrong about anything. You just have to let some of what you read go in one ear and out the other as you will just never be right no matter what you say. I never had a need for forums or even joined one until I got into building sporting rifles, then I bought a Harley and joined this one. Don't take anything to heart you read in a forum. It's just a bunch of opinions, and opinions will vary. Take the advice that makes sense to you and ignore the rest. Works for me. There is still a lot of good information here, just over look the BS.

‘05 Fat Boy 88 CI just turned 80K in September on stock original tensioners. Checked at 60 K before Alaska trip and looked brand new (hard to believe!)
Rebuilding entire motor this month, going 107 with new everything.. I’ll submit pictures of the old tensioners when they come out.. will be interesting to see…

agree with those above, replace them all!

great pictures by the way!

I'm guessing I know the answer but will ask. 2007 UG Classic, 50k miles. My first year with it figured I should check tensioners. Pics attached of the front one. Easy enough to replace that one which I will. Going to pick up a smaller dental mirror tomorrow to try and see the other one. Assuming it's in similar condition probably warrants replacing? Thanks. Just order both and replace. On my bike I just went to gear drive camshafts and don't have to worry about those anymore. If you go to gear drive make sure you check your crankshaft run out. Mine was at .002"

05 will have the spring loaded tensioners. The hydraulic cam plate conversion would be worth considering. Comes with a higher volume oil pump.

Somebody else mentioned your oil pump, and that would be my biggest concern at this point. Obviously, the shoe is maintaining tension, but all that material is going somewhere, and oil filters are so efficient.

going in for complete rebuild in 1 week… top to bottom, leaving the 5 speed as it is. Will be a 107 when it’s complete in 6 weeks… wife says buy a new bike.. trouble is I don’t want a new bike but this is exactly why HD does not have replacement motor program any longer….they want you to buy a new bike…

Oh damm! If the wife says 'buy a new bike' do not question her!

I went with a built 103 NightTrain to a M8 LowRider S, and when the LRS was stock, I think the M8 would have walked away from the NightTrain.

You will have to put a BUNCH of money in that TwinCam to make it keep up with a 114/117 M8.

That’s what my riding buddy said too! I will never sell my Fat Boy and I surely can’t ride two bikes at one time. Besides, I will not settle for anything less than a CVO Road Glide and they are a tad bit more expensive than my build will be….

Too much history on my bike… Key West, to Alaska, Hwy 50 East to west coast, Route 66 Chicago to LA, All but one Canadian province, The Yukon, Northwest Territories and the list goes on…….

You don't ride them at the same time, you take turns. Take one out, then the other. Never try to ride two motorcycles at the same time.

Tommy has 2 Harleys + a couple unmentionable bikes. He still racks up more miles on each of the Harleys than most people put on their sole bike, including me... except for this year. I might have him beat on one of his bikes (but not both combined).
