"Jiffy" stand sounds like it belongs on a Vespa -- not a Harley. I never call it that. I do use both of the others though: sidestand and kickstand.

Question: Has H-D always referred to it as the jiffy stand? If not, when did this name start?

 

I will "stand" there and give it a "jiffy" "kick".

Why "jiffy"?

Some info I found on other forums:

Harley-Davidson has always called it a jiffy stand, at least as long or longer than it has been called a kickstand. H.D. has been around a very long time and had they been more popular in the early years everyone would be calling it a jiffy.

Originally, most bikes had a frame mounted 'center stand'. On most older HD models, there was a center stand clipped to the inside of the rear fender requiring the operator to lift the whole back end of the bike to swing it into place under the frame, the "jiffy stand" was a quick easy method of standing the bike up without getting a hernia...the term jiffy stand was coined to distinguish the center stand from the side or "kick" stand as it could be deployed in a 'jiffy'.

the Jiffy stand came about 1912 IIRW. saw this on a show about HD on the discovery channell a few years ago. according to HD you could put their new stand down in a JIFFY then exit the bike vs exiting the bike and pulling it back up on the cumbersome axel stand.

I didn't come from an H-D background, so that's why I call it a kick- or side-stand. Most of the info I've found on the net says that the name "jiffy" stand has been around about as long as H-D has, in the owner's manuals and service manuals too. Probably the old timers that have been around H-Ds their whole lives will call it a jiffy stand -- I'm going to try and call it that myself from now on.

Kickstand. Have called it that for 30+ yrs.... The only thing I got Jiffy goes on my sammich....

Kick Stand

Some day's it's the only thing you can kick because kicking your
co workers. Isn't allowed :laugh:laugh

 

I been calling the thing that holds my bike up from the time I got my first bicycle through all the other two wheeled things I've ridden over the years until I moved up to Harleys ( notice how I said moved up!), a kick stand.

 

Jiffy stand . I tend to refer to parts names as they're called in the H-D parts books to save on confusion . The MoCo has their own dictionary of words for the parts of their motorcycles !

 

Kickstand and Centerstand. Makes sense.

 

It's a dang 'Kick Stand'

Side stand works for me,,

Center stand gets the rear wheel off the ground,,

"Jiffy" is a bit to gay for me,,,,
