Loud starter kick back

10089 Views 8 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  THE ROAD
Back a few months ago installed a DYNA TECH ignition system to gain some RPM . The damn thing caused such a violent kick-back when starting it sounded like it was stripping the gear teeth off the starter . $250.00 wasted . So I put a SE street module & coil , ran perfect for 6-8 months & now its started doing the same thing . And believe me , when that thing kicks back it sounds like the motor is coming apart . Its got to be doing some kind of damage to something in the starter or stator or something . Anybody have any idea whats going on or what might be causing this . It has started to happen pretty regularly lately .

My old starter did that. When it quit working, I bought a new one and replaced it. When replacing, I noticed that that violent kick-back grinding sound royally did zero to the internals. Not a scratchy on a single toothy.

New one does it. F it. It works, sounds like shot, but it works.
Yeah , several on the net said the same thing . No damage just a hell-of-a-noise ! Some said low voltage others said hot motor labors the starter -always use the choke (enricher)
when starting hot or cold-bump starter first to move piston , then start . Gonna try-em all .
Thanks for the come-back Mongo .
No prob, amigo!

I would imagine it's the low voltage issue, actually. That obnoxious sound usually occurs after I've cranked on it and the voltage seems to be compromised. Makes me cringe every time.
Have you load tested the battery?

Not yet but put the tender on it & only took 15 minutes for full charge on a year old glass-mat battery with tight connections . I'm thinking damage was done back when the dyna-tech ignition was doing its thing for about 2 months before I switched over to the SE-module & coil .
Thanks
A battery can show a full charge, but fail a load test.

I mention this, because my bike did this as well. I hated it. I ended up replacing what I thought was a good battery. Problem stopped.

Battery charged fast too. But failed a load test.

If amps drop too fast, the drive gear can move and it can get kicked off the starter ring gear. There's a lot of pressure there..........

Food for thought.

Thanks Super Dave , will have that load test checked !
