Yes they're the same tool. The 5-speed and 6-speed shafts arent that different in that the parts IN THE TRANS are the difference and although the clutch baskets are different between the 5 and 6 speeds, the shaft is approximately the same.
I've used the tools. I know guys that cut the race, or put a bead of weld on the race and tap a new one one, and have never had issues.
For the resord, I'm a huge fan of using the right tool for the job.
