I'm getting about 28 mpg in a new to me 97 heritage classic. only mods are hypercharger w/ K&N, bafflectomy, and a pilot jet change from 42 to 47. It runs okay, seems to run a little warm, and the pipes are kinday sooty. I haven't had an HD in 16 years, same model then too, but, i remember much better mileage.
What do the experts think? Thanks

Are you riding with a windshield? Sounds like she might be running a little rich but I prefer the pipes a little black to keep the engine running cooler. Might be time for a complete carb overhaul...certainly couldn't hurt and the kits are not that expensive.
Check all hoses for deterioration too.

mileage

Thanks, no, no windshield, but have one. What do you think the mileage ought to be, real world?

I get 41 or 42 but that's with an EPA leaned out hot running fuel injected newer bike

This is needle, stock? 4th grove down. Thoughts?
Thanks

My 2000 carb'd Deuce got about 40 average, running on the highway
and around town a bit. I would get on her here and there, but never
beat the thing senseless.

I had the SE slip on pipes, air cleaner, and jetted. She ran real clean
and responsive so I never did anything else other than sell her. Should
have kept my Deuce. But that's another story...

I would dyno your bike to make sure you're spot on, then there is no
question as to what you should be running for jets/needles/etc.

Good Luck!
