New cam install

Hey everyone... Have a 98 Dyna Low Rider w/ Evo engine... Bought a S&S cam.. Can I just remove the cover and remove and install or is it a pain to do???
And please, don't be one of the guys who sits at his computer waiting for someone to ask a question like mine & reply with the "Go spend 50 bucks and buy the repair manual"

In the stickies at the top of this section, is a link to the disassembly of an Evo, you obviously will not have to completly disassemble the engine, but this will give you a good idea of what you are looking at for pulling it apart. I had to split the rocker boxes to get them off the heads and out of the frame of my '91 Heritage. You will need a 1/4 drive-1/4" 12 pts socket to remove the tappet blocks, a 3/8 drive will not give the clearance to remove. If you have a wobble extension you may pull it off, I do not have a set of those.

A manual is a great investment, along with the parts catalog. Just sayin'
Haha... I know, I gotta get one for the just in case I can't figure it out!!! I just like to try and do stuff on my own and try and figure things out... S&S has a good video on how to do it.... But they remove the pushrods & all that stuff.. I was trying not too...
The video will at least give you an idea of what's involved.
It does, but it's alot more than I wanna do... And more parts I have to buy, I was trying to bypass all of that...
Its going to be a long winter.. You got time to figure it out..

You will have to remove the pushrods to change the cam.

No way around it . So does this mean that you give up.??? :eek
It's an easy job that can be done with your eyes closed.

I would not even worry about a manual, as those things like procedures and silly annoying stuff like torque settings are just useless.

I'm sure you will get it 100% correct by just winging it!
Pushrods and lifters need to be removed. I would install new lifters with the new cam too. The cam install gasket kit will include everything you need sans the lifters.
Also the cam lift wasn't mentioned, you might need fully adjustable pushrods too.
Thanks fellas.. Yes it will be a long winter here.. Nah, I'm not giving up, I will do it... My main thing was just seeing if there was an easy way to do it... I watched the whole video, it's not hard... I'm just not that patient...
Hey schmidtys, you mean the tappets right??.. The guy from S&S told me the same thing, but that's another 200 bucks... I've only got around 18000 miles on the bike, shouldn't the stock ones be fine??

The issue isn't that they're worn out, it's that there are better options to get you where you want to be. What are you trying to accomplish by replacing the cams? More HP? More torque? Replacing the cams is one half of the equation, and the tappets are the other.

Since you're already in there, get it all done in one go.

The MoCo recommends replacing lifters every 25,000 miles and you're at 18,000 anyway. Do the math. :thumbsup

Where'd you find them for that price? Best I could find is $275ish.
