I’ve been riding touring motorcycles for 15 years. They have all been metric bikes. I sold a Honda GoldWing trike last October and before that my ride was a 2010 Yamaha Road Star Silverado S. ( I loved that bike!!) Anyway, I couldn’t stay away from motorcycles. I always liked the look of Harley Davidson bikes but was always scared off by all the bad things I hear about them always breaking down. Despite that worry, and at the age of 70, I bought a 2003 Harley Davidson Fatboy with 3,109 miles on the clock. The bike was in a private collection. The dealer assures me that the bike has no issues but I wonder if damage was done by it being garaged and not driven much for 20 years. The body is in mint, almost showroom floor condition. I’m going to give this bike a try.

As for your posts about the tires…..I had the same concern. I asked the dealership if it needed new tires and was told the tires were excellent. If they are the original tires, it makes no difference if they look good, they simply should be changed for the sake of safety. I live in one of Raleigh, North Carolina’s suburbs and there are only a couple of Harley dealerships near me. However, I have a Harley mechanic who has his own shop. I’ve actually had him do a couple of jobs on the Roadie I had and he does wonderful work for a much better price.

I have another question about engine guards……..I purchased one that cost around $60.00 which isn’t a lot but they are just there to protect the bike if it goes down. One doesn’t need expensive guards do they?

Wow I’ve got a 2001 Fatboy I picked up from a guy that had not had the bike on the road in 12 years and only had 3500 in odometer. Bike needed a few things like a new fuel pump and all new gas lines, petcock but other than those few things it’s a beautiful motorcycle. Same color as yours too but no saddle bags.

You have great lo mile bike, Maintain it, take care of it, and ride it.
As it is a earlier Twin Cam 88 some where down the road you will need to inspect or replace the cam chain tensioners. HD had high wear on the early ones ( pre 2007). I would be comfortable to go to 20K or 25K. I replaced mine at 30K and they were completly shot one was metal to metal.
A planned repair/ replace is far better than a catastrophic failure.
