Forgive me if this question sounds stupid...when performing an oil change, the manual says run bike until you reach normal operating temperature. I don't have any sort if thermometer on my bike...so how long should you run/ride the bike? Let's assume the temperature is roughly 40-50 degrees outside.

I normally run it anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes depending on temperature. You're just trying to get 50 weight oil to evacuate faster and more complete.

It can take a long time for all the engine oil to reach operating temp. I've ridden bikes for hours before the engine oil reached 150* on a digital temp dip stick. The oil in the pan takes the longest to reach operating temp.
I run a cold engine for several minutes before changing oil. If the bike was just ridden I'll change the oil right away.

Thanks! I'm running 20-50 harley Syn3. I had my last 3 hole change at 6700 miles in May. I have about 9900 miles now, and I'm gonna do engine oil myself. The bike has been parked since Xmas.

Also, should I just let it idle, or actually ride a few miles?

Idling will warm the oil faster.
