Oil tank paint removal

Has anybody removed the black paint from your oil tank, and what kind of shape was the chrome in?? I had a couple chips on my 2007 fxst black oil tank and touched them up and now another chunk of paint chipped off. I was thinking of just taking the paint off it. I read somewhere they used chrome tanks that were seconds and painted them. I find it hard to believe that a metal plater could screw up enough tanks for this to be true. :tinfoilhat:

If your tank had chips in the paint, and there wasn't chrome underneath, it wasn't a chrome tank. HD buys the tanks from a vendor. If they don't pass receiving Q.C. I doubt HD accepts them.
Yeah, it is chrome underneath, and was thinking about removing the black paint but don't want any surprises if the chrome isn't up to snuff.:)

Only way to know is to do it. HD QC is pretty picky on cosmetic items. What ever the flaw is may not be visible once installed back on the bike.

Yeah, the chrome I see looks fine and the patch of paint that just came off is too big for touch up. Looks like a good project for January. :banana
Remove the paint and if the chrome is not up to par, have it repainted.
