Theres no doubt that Open looks good.I dont run one because I dont think its safe. I have a Phase III belt drive on my shovelhead and dont run it Open.Yeah yeah I know custom builders run open and thats thire business not mine. I do leave the derby cover off so heat buildup can escape. Observant Know it all": "Hey you lost your derby cover, better go back and look for it". Me: "Its back in '77 and if I had a time machine Id go back and stay there."

Is it because of something getting cot in the belt
I use to have one on my old shovel years back. Never had any issues with it. They are a little noisy but you get use to it. I think the only safety issues is wearing 70's bell bottoms. Don't want the belt grabbin those. Lol

I knew a guy that had open primary. Got his pant leg caught in belt and got yanked off of bike. Broke his leg in 3 places and spent 2 months in hospital

I have a narrow open belt primary on my Shovelhead. It's a little noisy, kindy jerky (no compensator), and makes me nervous when I put my left foot down.

Just close your eyes and think of would happen if you were pinned down by the bike and it was still running.

I've had 2 open primary shovels and never once came close to them grabbing me.
I haven't made up my mind on the open primary yet
I've moved on to different this a want to do to make this bike my own.

You can get some longer derby screws and about three washers per screw to space the derby cover away just enough to let the belt cool if you want to run the cover.

They're ok. Keep your foot out of it.
The factory wet clutch is much better, and quieter. If you do get an open primary, the first thing you want to do is get any information off the belt that's there. Width, tooth count, and tooth pitch. Sometimes there's a manufacturer name and part number. I can't count on both hands the times somebody breaks one, and has zero information on the belt. If I know what bike it's off of and they have a piece of the belt, I can figure the tooth pitch. And they do break.
I won't run one. My bikes probably spend as much time cutting across the pasture and through the ditch as my dirt bike.
And sand will chew up all them pretty parts.
