I have a new S&S carb. It requires a barrel end on the carbend of the cable to slip into the throttle bell-crank on the carb. Since I have an original grip with a solid steel cable, it's a little stiff for this application. I have barrel ends, but I'm thinking a stranded cable would be better. The grip itself is part of the handlebars as far as extension. That is, if you take the grip off, there is no handlebar underneath... just a mechanism for the spiral action turning of the grip. What have you done to address this problem and use a stranded cable to work with the S&S carb.

Note: The stiff steel cable has a problem getting around the radius on the throttle bell-crank on the carb. It's actually a push/pull carb... but many have said they only use the pull for this setup.

My Shovelhead has the solid wire cable and internal twist like yours. I used picture hanging twisted wire to make a new inner. I used old barrels and soldered them to the wire. Worked ok, but I bought and installed a new single wire cable anyhow. The carb end of my S&S "B" is held on with an adjustable barrel, the kind with a screw that pinches the cable into the barrel.

For those confused with the description or photo, this is the old style internal grip cable. The lug you can see on the bottom photo fits into a spiral slot in the grip assembly. When twisted, the lug and cable gets pulled towards end of bar, opening carb.

Looking thru my J&P Vintage catalog and see they have those throttle assemblies and replacement cables. I don't think J&P has the Vintage catalog online tho. Give me the exact make, model and year and I'll see if I can come up with the J&P part number.

I have a 1973 FLH Electra Glide. The carb is an S&S, Super "E". Here are a couple pics of the carb lever with barrel end openings and the barrel ends I intended to use..

The carb is a push/pull design... I intended to use pull only.

Possibly p/n 500-050? After looking, I think all I really need is a stranded cable on the existing setup.

I think the 500-050 is a solid wire replacement cable.
I've used those barrel ends before, should work on the S&S.
Hardware stores sell that stranded cable in bulk, all different sizes.
